Top 5 Web Design Mistakes

After years of developing web sites and through my experience in teaching web design, there are several common mistakes that seem to dominate the designer’s domain. These mistakes, though simple, could end up hurting your website severely, both in user return rates and an overall user satisfaction. Here are the top 5 common mistakes that you find on websites today. Please contact us if you have any questions or comments about this article.

5) Poor site design

Gone are the days where websites were filled with bulky images and banners. A new style of minimalistic web sites where the focus remains on the content is dominating the World Wide Web and we should all embrace it. The design of your should reflect the message that you are sending out to the world, with the emphasis being on what is important, not a bulky side banner you thought would “look cool”.

4) Poor development

With an increasing number of “web designers” who do not understand web programming, too often I see websites that are broken because of the lack of proper coding. When I have visited websites completed by inexperienced developers, I noticed that elements would be out of place or totally missing from the site. I have also noticed that the website outlook would differ from user browsers. It is vital that you work with a web designer who understands the development side of a website as well to ensure that your website is coded properly and fully functional.

3) Finding the right amount

A large part in designing a website is determining exactly how much content you would need per page. I have seen some websites where the content consisted of two sentences and a graphic, and I have seen other websites where the user has stuffed ten pages worth of content on one page. The key is the proper balance of content so that the user is able to find the information quickly without much distraction or frustration.

2) Animations

It is great to have a photo slideshow somewhere on your website flashing related images of your work; however you must use caution when determining what animations are to go where. Animations, mp3 players, video players etc., can be great fun on websites, but can also become extremely annoying very quickly. Self-starting audio and video should never be used on a website unless your site is a multimedia site and the user is expecting to watch a video. Animated gif’s and banners can be nice on the side of your page as long as the animation does not distract the user from the content. Photo slideshows are almost always great, so long as you have a maximum of 1-2 per page and are not overwhelming the user with your imagery.

1) Flash

It is my firm belief that Flash websites or websites with Flash navigation are dinosaurs that need to be put to rest. Flash is no longer a viable tool in today’s industry. It does not work on all computers, tablet and mobile phones so by using it, you are severely limiting your prospective audience. Flash is also poor for search engine optimization, it basically turns your entire website into a large image.
